Your Career Path is a Journey With Twists and Turns (Issue #23)
All hiring managers need this template + how to showcase your value
‘See your career path as a journey with twists and turns rather than a straight line.’
That’s the quote I read last week that reminded me it’s okay to have a windy road of a career path and it never has to follow a straight line.
Personally, mine hasn’t.
And just when I think I know 100% what I want to do next or where I want to go—something amazing happens and a new path is carved.
And that’s okay—it’s better than okay!
The 4 key questions
I hope you took some time last week to reflect on those 4 key questions and bringing you closer to understanding what you want out of your career. If you haven’t check out the 1st post in this monthly series, read below ↓
→ And as a reminder, I will continue to share with you simple steps to help you become more intentional about your career path over the next 3 weeks.←
ps. these are the steps I used to build my career that kept me leveling up in $$.
Week 1: How to clarify your goals
Week 2: (right here, right now) Building your case and communicating proactively
Week 3: Finding advocates and mentors
Week 4: Keep up with learning and growing
Helpful templates
I shared this with my LinkedIn network a few weeks ago and have received a lot of positive feedback so if you are currently hiring within your team—give this free Candidate Evaluation Template I built in Notion a try!
↳ Week 2 Exercise: Advocating for your Career
Alright, this week we are going to tackle 2 things:
Building your case
Communicating proactively
Here’s how to build your case:
Gather some information, because advocating for your career is easier when you have the receipts to back it up.
List your wins: Write down 3-5 key accomplishments from the past year. Things you would consider pivotal moments for your career or for your organization. Did you learn a new skill that helped your team reduce time to market or improve communication that resulted in faster delivery?
(e.g., “Reduced team workflow time by 20%”).
Gather feedback: Save praise—yes even the ones sent via Slack, thank you notes, performance reviews, or even client feedback to better demonstrate your impact and value.
Now, onto communication:
I am a huge fan of communication and over communication. You can read about it in almost every newsletter—guilty.
So, now that you have some data to back you up it’s all about setting up your advocacy statement/your story/your goals.
Simply put, the next step is to plan your communication.
I created a simple 5 step plan to help you:
Prepare your message
Create your advocacy statement
Choose the right time and place
Communicate with confidence
Best practices for following up and staying visible.
📰 Hello, AMA!
📢 You’re not alone
One of the best things about the Hello, AMA! questions is that they remind us that we’re all navigating similar challenges.
I’ve heard from so many of you saying, “This question hit home” or “I thought I was the only one struggling with this.”
If you’re facing a challenge in your career, chances are, someone else is too. So don’t keep it to yourself—speak up! Send me a message, drop a comment, or reply to this email with your question.
I’ll feature it (anonymously) in an upcoming newsletter—because your challenges, insights, and wins deserve space here.
Wellness Corner
When’s the last time you witnessed a random act of kindness? Better yet, when is the last time you made a random act of kindness?
Next week, February 17th is the celebration of National Random Act of Kindness.
💙 Let’s break down the science behind kindness and wellness
Kindness releases feel-good hormones
It reduces stress & anxiety
Kindness can improve heart health (higher oxytocin levels = lower blood pressure)
Giving is contagious
It boosts longevity (live longer, happier)
Your challenge this week: In honor of Random Acts of Kindness Day (2/17), do one unexpected kind act for someone. Whether its a simple compliment, helpful gesture or simply checking in, make those small moments count.
Until next time, stay well.
