Say It Better, Week 1: Cut the Fluff (Issue #43)
Join us for this month's 5 week series on improving your communication.
Hi friends,
Welcome to Week 1 of the Say It Better challenge—a 5-week communication reset designed for leaders (and humans) who want to get their message across with more clarity, confidence, and connection.
Each Tuesday in July, you’ll get a short challenge, a leadership tip, and a free resource to help you grow.
💬 WEEK 1 CHALLENGE: CUT THE FLUFF
Depending on where you are, it’s a short week this week. One less day in the office or on the work computer.
So, take one thing you’re writing this week—a Slack message, email, project update, meeting note—and reduce the word count by 30% without losing the meaning.
Why? Because clarity builds trust.
Your team doesn't need more words. They need better ones.
Try this simple before & after edit:
BEFORE: “I just wanted to quickly check in and see if by any chance you happened to have had time to look over the deck?”
AFTER: “Were you able to review the deck?”
Feels a bit scary, but it’s a bit better, right?

It’s short, direct, and will help you eliminate the habits that weaken your message.

I'm good at not saying 'I think' but I often say, 'Does this make sense'.
Oops!
This is great. And we are on the same wavelength. I created a swear jar and about a week later, I made it a “Swear and Just” Jar. Every time I use the word “Just” a dollar goes in.
